Register Now for Ride 'n Show, August 27-29

Don't miss you chance to register now for the Ride 'n Show at the newly renovated Pier 121 Marina off highway 121 on Lake Lewisville. Just a few miles from our previous location at Eagle Point, Pier 121's docks are flanked by a covered outdoor restaurant area that will make an ideal place for us to gather in the shade as attendees enjoy our antique and classic boats. The new restaurant, "Dinghy", is greatly expanded and upgraded, offering a great place to gather, eat, drink and be merry! We'll have all the favorite events on the schedule, beginning with a barbecue on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. in Al Kroemer's Garagemahal.

 

Then on Saturday morning at 8 a.m., we'll launch at Pier 121 and get the boats in position around the courtesy docks of the Marina. As usual, we'll have the opportunity during the day to take our boats out for a ride. We'll have lunch at the Dinghy Restaurant, and welcome visitors to the docks and answer questions about the boats. Then on Saturday night, we'll have a party (location TBA), and get up bright and early Sunday morning for our run, followed by the always popular Sunday Brunch at Eagle Point. White Rock Lake To See WBA Boats Again--Saturday, Sept. 11!

Building on the great success of last year's event, we'll be heading to the Corinthian Sailing Club again this year, this time on September 11, 2010. Given the significance of the date, we're adding a noon-time Parade of Boats with a color guard, in order to honor the memory of the victims

  

of the 9/11 attacks. If you would like to include your boat in the display and the parade, please contact David Kanally right away. Space is limited. Don't miss this historic event!

Dallas Summer Boat Show WBA Display was Great!!

You've heard of indoor/outdoor carpeting, right? Well, at the 2010 Dallas Summer Boat Show, July 23-25, the WBA had an indoor/outdoor display to rival its best at a boat show. Five boats, including Chuck Pool's '56 Yellow Jacket (above, left) and Chip Rathbun's '42 Century Imperial Sportsman (above right), both winners of their respective classes at Keels & Wheels this past May, Robin McGeorge's '57 Speedliner, David Kanally's '57 Cowell outboard and Jim Workman's '59 Chris-Craft Cavalier. adjacent to the WBA display table, while the other four boats were outside. The highlight of the display for many this year was John Graf's walk-through display of vintage Mercury outboards (below, left), each meticulously restored and beautifully displayed with period artwork and advertising. John trekked all the way from Houston with his massive rig. We all wish the crowds would have been bigger, but those who did come had a great classic boating display to enjoy. Lucas: What are these men doing?

We think Robin McGeorge is looking for leaks around the carb gasket with a propane torch while Stan Lehnhardt keeps his distance. The little four-banger Fageol AeroJet engine is out of Robin's Speedliner for a bench test and troubleshooting.

And what are these guys talking about?

Mark Wilson (l) and Dave Kuneman (r) are in the middle of what could be a little fish story, or a discussion on global warming. Dave has been helping Mark out with frame replacement on his '68 CC Supersport.

Next Meeting August 19th--Don't Miss It!

Join us at the Midway Point on Thursday, August 19th for the next monthly meeting of the WBA. We'll be finalizing details for the Ride 'n Show, and working out the details of our equally important White Rock Lake event slated for September 11. Come out and see some people who look surprisingly good for their ages. We've been seeing some faces from the past as well as new members! The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on Thursday, August 19th at the Midway Point at LBJ and Midway Road.

Join us for a light meal and moderate libation at 5:30 p.m. at the Midway Point prior to the meeting.

Shop Talk and Musings:

John Graf is an extraordinary guy. We first met him at Keels & Wheels in May, and WBA past president Bob Van Guilder thought it would be great if John could bring his exquisite display of vintage Mercury outboards to the Dallas Summer Boat Show.

WBA member Chip Rathbun gave him a call, and John agreed to make the long trip up from Houston with his treasures to share with the attendees at the boat show.

He arrived right on cue on Friday afternoon and began the almost ceremonial unpacking and setup of the display. Most of the motors are mounted on long stands on either side of John's 20' car-hauler trailer, making for nice walk-through display. Motors are arranged in ascending horsepower order. A couple motors are also on free-standing supports, which John wrestles out of the trailer onto the ground near the entryway of the display. All motors are covered lovingly with quilted matress covers for transport. Each outboard has been brought back to original (or better) condition down to the smallest detail. John spent countless hours during the past year just restoring gas caps, for cryin' out loud! We trust the people who visited John's display during the Summer Boat Show appreciate John's investment of time, money and passion, all willingly spent to bring his hobby to the public.
